Mahjong Tips

Posted by admin | Mahjong Tips | Tuesday 13 January 2009 9:04 am

Here are some tips to win at Mahjong :-

1. Although each tile layout requires a unique approach, the general strategy is to keep removing matching tiles in such a way that each removal would open up more possibilities for future tile matching.

2. You should open up new tiles with every pair they eliminate. Choosing obvious pairs every time, such as those from the top levels, will often lose the game by leaving essential tiles under cover.

3. In certain situations obtaining matching tiles after reshuffling can be either theoretically impossible or highly unlikely. The key is to avoid getting into positions where the above is likely to happen.

4. It is very crucial to focus and give your full attention and concentration to the game, when your mind wanders, even for a second, it will cost you a lot of time to refocus.

5. React fast. Time is the most important factor in the game, so it is imperative to be fast. Fast reaction means making the correct decision given the current situation as the result of previous decisions.

6. You will be required to imagine your movements several steps ahead. The game might look playable now, but if you don’t look ahead and you make the wrong move then the game could end with no solutions.

7. Elaborate your visual memory. Some of Mahjong characters on the tiles look quite similar, especially when you have to quickly scan many tiles over and over. It is important to be able to distinguish all the tiles correctly, and often memorize where you last saw “that piece”.

Mahjong Strategy

Posted by admin | Mahjong Strategy | Tuesday 13 January 2009 9:04 am

The object of Mahjong solitaire is to clear the playing area of tiles by matching pairs of tiles. Players can remove only those matching pairs of tiles where each tile has at least one side (left or right) free and no other tiles placed on top. Matching tile pairs can be removed by clicking on each tile in the pair. There are a total of 72 pairs in a game of MahJong Solitaire. The tiles have standard suits. These suits are Characters, Bamboos, Circles, Dragons, Winds, Seasons. When matching pairs, Seasons and Flowers are the only suits you do not need to match exactly. Reshuffle button can be used when no moves are available. A maximum of 5 reshuffles per game is allowed. You can play online internet game Mahjong Solitaire and win money prizes.

  • If 4 or less, expect to be ready in 9 turns - play to win.
  • If 5, what you do depends on your luck - if you have good draws, you could be ready early, if not you should give up.
  • If you need 6 or more, give up and play defensively, hoping for a draw.

Playing mahjong to win - take chances. Discard anything you don’t need, even lucky tiles. After 6 or 7 tiles, feel free to say “chow” or “pung”. Playing mahjong not to lose - Discard cautiously. After 4 draws, if you need only 3 tiles or less, go for it. Otherwise, play for a draw. Playing mahjong  for a draw - don’t be the first to discard a dragon or wind except your own. Don’t play with doubles. Don’t claim one for a triplet; the discard means it is now safe to discard. Keep your hand concealed — don’t chow or pung.Discard in the following order - isolated ordinary winds. Worthless to you and probably not useful to opponents, unless they have some already. So, discard very early before they are able to “pung”. If you are not the dealer, start with East. Then discard the Wind of the player on your left. Then the player opposite you and then the one to your right.

Terminals - If you have 1-6-9 which do you discard first? If you get 2-3, you can use the 1, but if you get 7-8, you won’t need the 9 because you have the 6. So discard the 9 first. And dispose the shortest suit first. Dragons - Discard early rather than late to keep opponents from using “pung”. Keep pairs, but discard isolated ones right after the Winds or not at all. Special Winds - The prevailing wind is wanted by everyone. Discard this wind early, but keep your own until discarded twice by others. But beware after turn 9 or 10 since someone may be using it as a pair. Your double wind is extremely valuable - keep it until useless.Simples - 4, 5 and 6 are extremely valuable and should be kept as long as possible. Change mahjongg tactics after turn 10. Be aware of what others are collecting. Winds, terminals and dragons are now very dangerous. Simples are also dangerous.

Mahjong Game Scoring

Posted by admin | Mahjong Game Scoring | Tuesday 13 January 2009 8:59 am

When someone has gone out, the scores are added up (the banker’s being doubled) and the score of the winning hand is awarded to the winner by each player, (the donation by the banker being double if the banker did not go out). When calculating the score, all of the points are added up and the number of doublings is added up. The score is then doubled this number of times. As with the many variations of mah jong, there are many variations in scoring. It is best to agree upon “house rules” when beginning the game. Scoring is a three-step process: First, points are determined; next, the points are multiplied according to any applicable doubles; finally, payment is determined. Whether the winning player is the dealer or a non-dealer, and whether the winning tile was from the wall or a discard, affects both the scoring and payment.

Points: 20 points are given as a reward for winning the hand. Only the winner receives points. Depending upon the combinations held in the winning hand, additional points are added. For example, sequences do not add points, but triplets do. Melded triplets score fewer additional points than do concealed triplets. Simple triplets score fewer points than do terminals or honors. Pairs only score points if the pair is a dragon, prevailing wind or the player’s own wind OR if it is a pair of “double wind” tiles(see scoring table). If the last tile is drawn from the wall, the player scores 2 additional points; if the hand was concealed throughout the hand but went out with a discard, the player scores 10 additional points; if the last tile was a last chance tile (the 2nd tile of a pair, the middle tile of a sequence, or the “inside” tile of a terminal sequence . . . the 3 of a 1,2,3 or the 7 of a 7,8,9, the player scores an additional 2 points. Please refer to the Scoring Table to run down the list of point options.

Doubles: After the points are decided (rounded to the nearest 10), the winner shows the ways a hand is worthy of doubles. 1 double is 2x; 2 doubles are 4x; 3 doubles are 8x, etc. the points accrued. There are eight possibilities for earning doubles: lucky sets, concealed hand, groups of sets, ways of going out, special inclusions, no points, consistency, or flowers/seasons. Please refer to the Scoring Table for further explanation.

Payments: Each player begins with 2000, and points are rounded to the nearest 10th prior to determining the doubles. The player responsible for the winner going out (discarder) must pay. If the winner goes out on a draw from the wall, all 3 losers must pay. The dealer must alway pay double or be paid double.

There are four payment situations:

  1. If dealer goes out on a self-drawn tile, each player pays 2x
  2. If dealer goes out on a discard, discarder pays 6x
  3. If non-dealer goes out on self-drawn, dealer pays 2x, others pay 1x
  4. If non-dealer goes out on a discard, discarder pays 4x (whether dealer

Initial Points and the “Limit”: Max score is 500 points AFTER DOUBLING (the limit is the highest final score after doubling). Therefore, the maximum payment would be 2000 points for a non-dealer, and 3000 points for a dealer.

To score: the winning player begins with 20 points. She then looks at each of the four sets and the pair and computes applicable points. Then the winner assesses how the last tile affects points. If “no points,” and the score is 20, a double will be earned for “no points.” Eg. If a “no points” hand was concealed and won on a discard (add 10) then double it for no points and then figure out payment. The winner then computes any applicable doubles, and then figures out payment. Ideally, each player should score own her hand, with other players serving as a “check” for mistakes.

Runs

To go out (finish the game), a player needs to have 4×3s or 4s of a kind plus a pair. You may substitute runs for the threes and fours of a kind and if you pick up the last tile of the run from the discarded tiles, you must declare it in the same way as you would declare a three or four of a kind.

Limit

Usually, a limit to the score is set and if that limit is exceeded in a game then the limit is used as the score thus, people are protected from a single, high-scoring game which could upset the whole score. In this way, the dynamics of the game can be modified. With a low limit, the players’ performances over the whole set of games is taken into account whereas with a high limit, only the most recent games influence the score.

Mahjong Game preparation

Posted by admin | Mahjong Game preparation | Tuesday 13 January 2009 8:58 am

Before palying any game you have know rules or ragulations of the game. Each game is played by shuffling up the tiles and making a four wall structure, each wall being 18 tiles, piled two high so that each wall contains 36 tiles. These walls are then arranged so that they make a square. This procedure is analogous to shuffling a deck of cards. Each player then throws a dice and the highest scoring is the banker. The banker then throws two dice and counts around the same number of walls. He then throws them again and counts from one end of the chosen wall the same number of tile piles. He then takes this pile out and puts the two tiles on top of the wall at the end continuing in the direction he was counting - this is called the rear. This procedure is analogous to cutting a deck of cards.

After this, he takes two piles (four tiles) at a time and deals them out to each player in turn so that each player receives three piles. Then he gives each player an extra tile and himself two. This means that each player has 13 tiles and the banker has 14. This procedure is analogous to dealing the cards. These reflect the games origin as a paper card game as opposed to the tile-based game that it is today. Each player then sorts their hand out and any seasons or flowers are laid out and for each one placed down, that player takes either of the two tiles at the rear (or the remaining one if just one is left). When both tiles at the rear are taken, two more are taken from the end of the wall to replace them. If a player has four tiles of a kind (for example four 3 bamboos) he places these down (one tile facing upwards and the rest facing downwards) with the seasons and flowers and takes one from the rear. After this, each player has 13 playable tiles and the banker has 14. If the banker cannot make a wining hand from the tiles he has, he chooses one tile to place down in the middle (where the discarded tiles are placed) and then it is the turn of the next player. Everyone now has 13 tiles in their hand.

Playing

Each player is trying to make a hand of four 3 of a kinds and a pair. If he gets a 4 of a kind, this is placed down and an extra tile is collected from the rear. Normally, a player would take his turn but if he can pick up a discarded tile from the middle to make a three or four of a kind or, if he only needs one tile to win, to make a pair, he can do so out of turn. In the case of making a 3 or 4 of a kind and without finishing the game, play returns at the person next in turn after the person who picked up therefore it is possible to miss a go if the person after you picks up before you get your go. Normally, a person picks up a tile from the end of the wall (not the end with the two tiles on it) or from the middle and places the tile in their hand, making pairs, 3 and four of a kind. They then take a tile that they don’t want and place it, face up, in the area in the middle of the walls so that people can see what it was. If someone can pick it up (either because it is their turn next or because they can make a 3 or 4 of a kind or the pair to win the game) then they can only do so before another tile is placed at the end of the discarded tile row. When the discarded tiles fill a row in the middle, that row is turned over and it is up to the memory of the players to remember which tiles have been placed down. If you have a pair in your hand and you see a tile discarded, you can pick up out of turn to make a 3 of a kind but you must display this hand straight away (all tiles facing upwards). If you pick up a tile to make a 3 of a kind from the wall, you can keep it in your hand so that you can make a 4 of a kind if you are lucky. If you have a 3 of a kind in your hand and you pick up a tile that has been discarded, you must display it straight away and pick up a tile from the rear. The 4 of a kind that you have just made is called a visible four of a kind and is placed with all four tiles facing upwards.

If you have a 3 of a kind in your hand and you pick up a tile from the wall, you must display it straight away (you cannot make a 5 of a kind and if you have a 4 of a kind in your hand, you cannot collect enough 3 of a kinds to win) and pick up a tile from the rear. The 4 of a kind is called a hidden four of a kind and is placed with only one tile facing upwards. If you pick up a season or a flower, you need to put it down straight away and pick up another tile from the rear. In addition to collecting tiles that are the same as each other, you can also collect runs of the same suit (such as a 3, 4 and 5 circles). These do not gain any points but they will count as equivalent to a 3 of a kind as far as going out is concerned. If you have 4 runs and a pair, you go out and, although you don’t score many points, nobody else does. Eventually, you or someone else will get enough runs or 3 or 4 of a kinds and a pair to go out (finish). In this case, the person who goes out is the only one that scores any points. There are some special hands (the wriggling snake - 1 and 9 of Circles, Ten thousands and bamboos, one of each wind, one of each dragon and any one the same as those mentioned already to make a pair) and there is a special procedure called Conquering The Four of a Kind whereby if you need a particular tile to make a run to go out and it is used in a 4 of a kind, you can take it to make the run
